Offshore Oil Rig Welder Jobs
If you are interested in welding on the offshore rigs, you'll need to do a little leg work. First off, get the
basic offshore certs required these days, namely, SafeGulf and HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training).
Also needed by some contractors are Fall Protection, Water Survival, and TWIC card (Transportation Workers
Identification Credential).
All of these are pretty easy to get, and while some contractors will help you with acquiring these, if you show
some initiative and get them yourself before applying, your chances of getting hired improve dramatically,
especially if you haven't worked offshore before.
If you have welding experience, but are not yet certified, you may want to consider applying for an offshore
maintenance roustabout position, where you can spend time as an assistant to an experienced offshore
welder.
In many cases, this is also the route a more experienced welder breaks into offshore work; taking a position
beneath your skill set may be a little hard to swallow, but thinking long term, it will allow you to answer 'yes'
to the interview question as to whether or not you have offshore experience, and make available to you the higher
paying rig welder and roving rig welder positions.
Once you are hired to work on a rig, you'll be reporting to the rig maintenance supervisor. Day-to-day tasks for
offshore welding jobs involve making repairs as well as the build-out of new steel structural components.
You may also be assigned in a roving capacity, going from rig to rig in order to make repairs, or help a crew
get a large welding project completed swiftly. Maintaining and servicing all welding gear is a given.
Wages for Offshore Welder Jobs
For starting positions, wages range from 66k to 80k a year. Salaries for offshore welding
jobs vary greatly on experience, skill sets, and years of experience, as well as the number of previous
projects and project locations. Pay will progress in your offshore welding career as you acquire more
skills and certifications, and becoming the rig maintenance supervisor (and the 6 figure salary that goes with
it) is a distinct possibility.
