Offshore Catering Jobs

Offshore catering jobs are one of the secrets to breaking into offshore work if you don't have previous offshore experience or oil drilling experience.  Getting hired by a catering contractor to the offshore rigs is a great proverbial foot in the door for entry-level workers, and a real career-boost for experienced cooks, bakers and chefs.  Pay is generally much, much better for these positions offshore than there land-based counterparts, and the extra time off is a nice bonus as well. 

If you are really serious about working offshore, here is another secret - apply with the catering contractors in the late fall - early winter. Turnover on rigs is high, and really high during the winter.  Let's face it - braving a winter in the North Sea (or even the Gulf of Mexico) isn't everyone's idea of a good time. But if you have the offshore bug, now is a great time to apply to the offshore catering contractors; virtually all of them are currently hiring.

Getting hired in the offshore catering department is also a good strategy if your ambition is to get on the drilling crew or crane crew as well; once you are offshore, it is a lot easier to get to know people, and make friends in the other departments. If you do good work, when a roustabout opening comes up, you'll be in.

The offshore catering department includes everyone from the Chef \ Camp Boss, Cooks and Night Bakers on down to the Stewards, Galley Hands and Housekeepers.  The department as a whole is responsible for food and meals, keeping the common and living quarters clean, and doing laundry.
